We Sold Everything to Live on the Road as a Family
In search of more freedom, less routine, and a life that feels truly ours.
OUR STORY
The journey began in 2018 in Switzerland. At the time, we were living in a beautiful home, surrounded by everything we thought we wanted. We had worked hard, built a comfortable life, and checked many of the boxes society tells us we’re supposed to check. One evening, we were sitting at our dining table, looking around at everything we had achieved. We looked at each other and asked a simple question: “We have everything… and now what?” Do we just keep doing this for the next 30 or 40 years?
There was nothing wrong with our life. In fact, we were incredibly grateful for it. But something inside us was telling us there had to be more. More experiences. More adventure. More growth. More of the unknown. The thought wouldn’t leave us alone. So we made a decision. A decision that felt exciting, scary, overwhelming, and freeing all at the same time. We sold almost everything we owned and stepped into a completely different life. Looking back, we had no idea where that decision would lead us.
What followed was a journey filled with incredible places, unforgettable experiences, and lessons we could never have learned from behind a desk. We crossed borders, explored new countries, learned new skills, solved unexpected problems, and discovered that plans rarely go exactly as expected and that’s often where the best stories begin.
But every challenge taught us something valuable. And every mile brought something new. What surprised us most, however, wasn’t only the places. It was the people. Before we left, we thought the adventure would be about destinations. The mountains. The coastlines. The famous landmarks. Instead, it also became about human connections. Throughout our travels, we met some of the kindest, most generous, and open-hearted people we could have imagined. People who helped us when they didn’t have to. People who shared meals, stories, advice, laughter, and friendship. Those encounters changed us. They opened our hearts and our minds. They taught us to trust more, judge less, and appreciate the simple connections that make life meaningful. For that, we will be forever thankful.
The memories we’ve collected over the years are worth far more than anything we sold back in 2018. The experiences, friendships, lessons, and adventures have shaped who we are today in ways we never could have imagined when we first sat at that dining table wondering if there was more to life. And the answer, for us, was yes. There was. We’re grateful every day that we found the courage to take that first step.
The adventure has been everything we hoped for and so much more.
Living with purpose
We see life as a journey, one that grows and changes, just like we do. Instead of holding on to things, we choose to collect moments, experiences, and time together. Traveling has taught us to slow down, stay curious, and live with intention. It’s also why we’ve chosen to homeschool our kids. We want to be responsible for the values that shape them.
We believe it’s important to think for ourselves, not just follow what everyone else is doing. We believe in questioning, reflecting, and trusting.
WHO WE ARE
MARTIN is 49 years old and a true all-round talent in the spirit of the classic MacGyver. Living by the motto: “If it doesn’t fit, we make it fit.” As long as he can tinker, fix, and build something with his hands, he is in his element. He constantly surprises us with creative, sometimes slightly wild and unconventional ideas – life with him is never boring.
As a former law enforcement officer, he also naturally takes care of the family’s well-thought-out safety setup. His electric guitar from younger, wilder days has now been traded for a cozy acoustic guitar, which is perfect for campfires and relaxed evenings.
AMY is 45 years old and always deeply committed to the well-being of the entire family. From an early age, she had a strong passion for travel and was able to live that dream as a flight attendant for many years. Her career shift into physical therapist now benefits the family regularly when it comes to health and physical well-being.
She feels most at home by the sea and in nature. When you see her gazing into the horizon, the idea of “world peace” suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. Her love for long nature walks hasn’t fully transferred to the rest of the family yet… but she’s working on it.
HAILEY is our 3-year-old Mini Australian Shepherd who has absolutely no concept of personal space. Her daily responsibilities include chasing balls, searching for balls, and reminding everyone that there might be a ball nearby. When she’s not busy with her demanding ball-related schedule, Hailey can usually be found seeking attention from her favorite humans. However, despite her confidence at home, she’s also a world-class scaredy-cat. Strangers? Suspicious. Other dogs? Highly suspicious. A plastic bag blowing across the yard? Clearly a situation that requires monitoring from a safe distance. To be completely honest, we’re not entirely convinced Hailey knows she’s a dog. She seems to believe she’s a small, furry human who just happens to be exceptionally athletic and better looking than the rest of us. Whether she’s supervising important meetings or chasing her favorite ball, Hailey’s enthusiasm, loyalty, and goofy personality make every day a little brighter.
Martin – AMY – Lynn & Jamie
LYNN is 16 years old and our little whirlwind. Her energy alone could power a small town, and her imagination could fill several fantasy book series.
She has a strong passion for drawing and currently spends most of her time creating digital art. When she gets immersed in it, everything around her simply disappears. Honestly, we’re still trying to figure out where she got this artistic talent from. It’s clearly not from us. She’s our creative little gem in the family, and besides drawing she also loves singing, dancing, and training our dog, who is probably her most patient student. She has a deep love for animals, so it’s no surprise that she dreams of one day running her own little farm.
JAMIE is 14 years old and the family’s very own human computer. We’ve long since stopped questioning his memory because, more often than not, he’s right. He’s also an excellent cook, which makes him a highly valued member of the household.
Jamie’s biggest passion is theme parks and roller coasters. He knows an astonishing amount about ride designs, records, manufacturers, and the engineering behind them. Give him a few minutes, and he can tell you more about roller coasters than most people learn in a lifetime. If you see him walking around with headphones on, there’s a good chance he’s listening to theme park music and imagining his next great attraction. His dream is to work in the theme park industry one day, and honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if he does. In fact, if Jamie ever won the lottery, he’d be building his own amusement park.
The Rigs That Carried Us Across the USA and Canada
Life on the road has taken us through a few different rigs. Each one with its own personality, quirks, and stories to tell. Here’s a look at the rolling homes that have carried us across the USA and Canada as a family.
Our first motorhome “Bismarck”, that kicked off our USA/Canada road trip in 2019
A Chevrolet Express 4500 Cutaway with a Coachmen “Freelander” 26BH build, powered by a 6.7L V8 petrol engine. It featured one slide-out and a bunk bed over the cab, plus a queen-size bed in the back – perfect for family life on the road.
We lovingly named it Bismarck because it felt like a big ship cruising the roads – steady, bold, and full of adventure. At 31.8 ft (approx. 9.7 m), it truly was our little piece of heaven and the perfect motorhome for our first big road trip.
Our “little treasure” that crossed the Atlantic twice and became our cozy home on wheels
We traveled with a RAM 1500 featuring the legendary 5.7L HEMI engine, paired with a Grand Design “Reflection” 150 Series 268BH 5th wheel. It measured 31.1 ft (approx. 9.5 m), with a total setup length of 46 ft (approx. 14 m).
With its one slide-out, it opened up into a surprisingly spacious living area, which is one of the biggest joys of fifth wheel living. We loved the extra room it gave us compared to our motorhome, making life on the road feel much more comfortable and open. Inside, it had bunk beds in the back for the kids and a queen-size bed in the front section.
OUr Skoolie “albus” or “iron lady” – From School Bus to Family Home on Wheels
Our last rig was a 2011 INTERNATIONAL school bus with a 7.2L Duramax engine. It was a true beast on the road at 34 ft (approx. 10.5 m). Built like a tank, it felt like our own little ark on wheels, ready for any adventure.
In just four months of hard work, we transformed a conventional yellow school bus into our very own rolling home. Unlike our previous rigs, it had no slide-outs, so the living space was smaller, but that was part of the magic. It gave us the freedom to design everything exactly the way we wanted, focusing only on what truly mattered to us as a family.
Inside, it featured two bunk beds for the kids and a queen-size bed in the back, making it both practical and cozy in its own unique way. It became more than just a vehicle, it was a project full of heart, creativity, and determination, and truly felt like our adventure fortress on wheels.
Our “Salty air hideAway” – the unexpected home base we created
With two teenage kids, our bus seemed to get a little smaller every day. So we headed north, dreaming of finding a property in Maine where we could create a home base between adventures. Life, however, had other plans. Somewhere along the way, we ended up buying a little house in Florida. The one place we had all agreed we would never settle. Too hot, too crowded, we said. After a full renovation, it became our cozy Florida nest. The kids finally have rooms of their own, and our beloved bus has been passed on to a lovely young family ready to start their own adventures. Still, the road hasn’t stopped calling. We can feel that minimalist lifestyle quietly tugging at us, reminding us of the freedom we loved so much. For now, we’re enjoying this unexpected chapter. As for what comes next? We’ll see where the road and life decide to take us.
